The Hungry Historian Tour

For those who prefer a lot less driving, a little of the areas fascinating history and culture and some truly outstanding food! Caveat: this tour is NOT available Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

First, a tour of state capitol Merida's main square, visiting the oldest cathedral in North America, the state government building with its larger than life murals depicting Yucatan's often violent history and perhaps some quick shopping or if you prefer, a taste of exotic fruit sherbet at the Sorbeteria Colon, a Merida favorite since 1907.

You’ll also see the historic Paseo de Montejo, with its mansions built in the late 1800’s by wealthy white sisal plantation owners who wanted to emulate the style of the French Champs Elysees in Paris. Fun fact: did you know that there were more millionaires per capita in Merida than anywhere in the world during the sisal boom? Did you know that none of those millionaires were Mayan?

After this historic part of the tour, we head out to the outskirts of Merida where you can see hammocks being made in a town famous for its hamacas. There, you will also visit one of the finest restaurants in the area, featuring some of the best Yucatecan food you will have anywhere, cooked in the traditional underground manner.
